NFL Draft 2007 - What The Lions Should Do
Well, the draft is only days away and the pundits have already gone wild with prognostications on what will happen on draft day. We can all try and guess what each team will do, and that’s fun, but it doesn’t really help the team much. The Lions are one of those teams that need help (badly) so hopefully they have their ears wide open. Because I have a suggestion for what the Lions need to do with their #2 overrall pick. Hey, Millen. Listen up. Trade down!
The Lions have so many needs (on both sides of the ball) that they absolutely must gather more top draft picks to try and stem the bleeding. Sure, grabbing Jamarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Joe Thomas or Gaines Adams with the #2 slot would be nice. They’ll have their “big impact” player that will look nice to the press. But will that player really make a huge impact this year? Maybe, but the Detroit Lions are a boat with lots of holes. They need to fill as many as possible and try and get back to .500 football. That’s right, .500. I’m not talking Super Bowl or even playoffs, here. Let’s just stop the bleeding and try and win as many as we lose. Nothing radical. Just .500 ball. And to turn this franchise around, they need to pull off a solid draft this year.
With Kevin Jones and Tatum Bell in the fold, I think the team is set at RB (at least for this year) and gambling on a WR at the #2 slot is not the wisest of ideas, especially given this team’s track record. So, if I was the GM of the Lions, here is what I would do - trade down as far as I can. Draft the best defensive players on the board for each round and maybe, just maybe grab a QB to develop. With mad scientist Mike Martz at the helm, this offense should at least be average.
But let’s face it friends - the defense is a joke. Teams look forward to playing against us. We need a lot of fresh young talent on the defensive side of the ball. Guys that are hungry to play all 16 games full tilt on every play. No prima donnas, just workman like players that love to hit. If you get enough hard hitting defensive guys in the draft, at least the attitude may switch. We need a tougher, angrier, most fearless defense.
Then, with Lions camp jam packed with high impact rookies, they can always hope that the entire Bears team gets hurt in pre-season.
