Wishful Thinking On A Bye - Fire Millen & The Tampa 2
Okay, with the Lions on a bye, and the team at 1-6, you would think that now might be the perfect time to fire team CEO/GM Matt Millen. I don’t want to get personal (I’m sure he’s a nice guy) but the truth is that he hasn’t gotten the job done. Millen inherited a 9-7 team with great prospects for the future. Since then, the team has gone 22-65. The guy has to go and with the team on a bye, why not do it over the weekend and announce it on Monday? It’s not like it’s going to adversely affect the team’s shot at making the playoffs. They aren’t gonna make it folks. So, let’s get this guy out of here, stat!
By bringing in a new CEO/GM now, the young players will know that A) the team will not tolerate poor performance from anyone, front office included and B) the future is now and the Lions are ready to move ahead. Now, who to hire? Personally, I’d love to see Mike Martz in that role, or if they can throw enough cash, Jimmy Johnson. But to be honest, any fantasy football geek that you find in the local bar has to do a better job than Millen has.
With the team on a bye, now would appear to be the perfect time for the Lions to plan for the future. Will they? Probably not. If I’m guessing right, the coaches are probably huddled in the tape room looking at old Tampa defenses, trying to see why the Tampa 2 scheme isn’t working here in Detroit. That’s because it’s old. Teams have seen it before and learned how to exploit it. The other teams running this same scheme (the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers) are 18th and 27th in total defense. Why not dump Millen now and bring in some new blood with some fresh ideas on the future? I guess that’s just wishful thinking for us Lions fans.
