Lions Camp News: Shaun Rogers, Rex Tucker & Casey Fitzsimmons
With news coming out of the Lions training camp every hour, it’s hard to stay on top of it. So I won’t really try. If you need the latest news, definitely hit one of the four million “up to the minute” football sites out there. However, I will try and recap news on a semi-regular basis and post my opinions as well. Consider us a good place to stop and get your in-depth analysis after you grab those latebreaking headlines. So here goes…
The Lions training camp has been rolling for almost a week and there have been some ups (the signing of Ernie Sims, the return of Boss Bailey and the excellent showings by Dre Bly) and downs (injuries to starting right tackle Rex Tucker and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Shaun Rogers). Hopefully Tucker and Rogers will take it easy, and make it back in time for the season openers. Rogers reportedly has a sprained shoulder and will be week to week. As for Tucker, we just don’t know at this point, but all indications are that this is a serious knee injury. Anytime you lose a starter on the line - that’s bad.
The Lions receivers are being scrutinized heavily and some of the players are being called out. On Wednesday, Charles Rogers did not even get a snap in the ofensive walkthroughs. When asked about it, coach Marinelli told reporters “Every rep you get, hopefully you’re trying to earn it. And if you like those reps, and you keep working, you may get some more. That’s the message we’re sending.” Hmmm…
As for surprises, the biggest surprise involves the seeming demotion of Marcus Pollard at tight end. So far, Casey Fitzsimmons has worked with the first team since day one. Pollard was the second most targeted receiver on the team last year and he’s about the closest that the team has to a sure thing when it comes to receiving. I’m baffled. Pollard is a proven receiver that still has great hands and get down the field. Perhaps they already have Pollard penciled in as the starter and simply want to see what Fitz can do. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this situation. From a fan’s perspective, I’d really like to see them keep Pollard in the starting lineup and frankly, use the guy a little more.
