Will Mike Williams Or Charles Rogers Be Cut?
There are numerous reports in the media that wide receiver Mike Williams was fined around four hundred thousand dollars last year by the Detroit Lions. There are rumors that he has been late to meetings, has shown a poor attitude and has been overweight. There are also conflicting reports about whether he showed up overweight to camp this year. We aren’t here to say whether these rumors are true or not. The fact is that news organizations all over the state are reporting on this.
Charles Rogers has been a problem for the Lions since day one. Rogers has battled constant injuries, a suspension for drugs (allegedly) and a team benching for poor performance. This guy can barely make it onto the field, let alone play at a level that is worthy of his first round draft status.
With Roy Williams looking like a potential stud and newcomer Corey Bradford in the fold, the WR lineup could be an interesting situation to watch. It may show whether the new regime has the balls to get tough and take this team to the next level. If all of the rumors are true, we would not be surprised if Mike Martz and Rod Marinelli decide to make an example of one of the WRs and cut them loose. Martz seems to be setting a tone early, according to this quote from Mlive.com’s Detroit Lions Weblog: “That evaluation is a long way away. Glenn Martinez, Eddie (Drummond) and, of course, Roy (Williams), those three have been extremely consistent. I’m very, very pleased with Eddie.” When asked specifically about Mike Williams, Martz told reporters, “He’ll determine that. Whether it’s Mike or a running back or a tight end, they’ll determine their own future. I have nothing to do with that.” Ouch.
Our early prediction: Roy Williams, Corey Bradford, Eddie Drummond, Scottie Vines and Glenn Martinez are in. Either Mike Williams or Charles Rogers will be traded, or cut (if no one takes the trade bait).
