Kitna Haters Everywhere!
If you caught ESPN’s Pardon The Interruption today, you must have saw the guest hosts (Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser must be on vacation again) rip on Mike Martz and the Lions, specifically Martz’s comparison of Jon Kitna to Kurt Warner. The guest hosts (one of whom I believe was Jay Moriarty of the Chicago Sun Times) ripped on Kitna and said that the comparison was way off base. Actually I’ve got to agree with him there. Kitna is no Kurt Warner (Warner won two MVPS). But I also think that’s exactly what Martz has to say right now, especially if he needs Kitna to learn the system and feel confident leading the team. Kitna is no future Hall of Famer by any means but he is the starter, and let’s face it, he’s in a tough situation in Detroit. Martz is obviously just using the press to try and instill a little confidence into the guy.
Recent comments on my post Lions Training Camp Questions Abound ripped on Kitna as well. And deservedly so. He was a second stringer (he lost his job to Carson Palmer) in Cincy and he was never able to take the Bengal to the next level. However, the team brought in Carson Palmer, had a ton invested in the kid, and had to give him his shot. Many QBs have had success in the NFL after mediocre years elsewhere. I don’t think the guy is going to light up defenses this year, but as I have stated before, I think he’s an upgrade over Harrington. Believe me, if the team starts 0-3, I’ll be leading the hating. But until then, I’m all for giving the guy a chance.
